Design of Ceramics: Flow of Idea

コレクション展

Komatsu Makoto, Crinkle Series “Tumbler J”, 1975

We use many kinds of ceramics in our daily lives without really thinking about it. Because they are so familiar to us, we may not think much about who made them and how they were made. However, whether it is a mass-produced item or an artist’s work, there is someone who made that work. It is formed by the overlapping thoughts and ingenuity of many people.

This exhibition focuses on post-war Japanese utilitarian ceramics from the museum’s collection and introduces the origins of the ceramic works that support and color our lives from the perspective of design. The same cup, for example, can take on a variety of forms depending on the maker’s thoughts and techniques, as well as the environment surrounding it. Please enjoy imagining the source of ideas for creating familiar shapes.

Collection Highlights

コレクション展

Emile Gallé, Dish with Nuts and a Dragonfly, Late1880s

Our museum was established in October 2002 in this region, known for the long history of the production of Mino-yaki (Mino-ware) ceramics. Since its opening, the museum has collected modern and contemporary art pieces created in and after the end of the 19th century throughout the world with the theme of “Modern Age of Ceramic Art”. We have been collecting the artworks according to three main concepts; (1) “Ceramic artworks created by individual artists” in the modern and contemporary era, (2) “Practical ceramic ware” where works are created by hand by artists in small volumes and at a reasonable price for practical use, and (3) “Industrial ceramic ware” which includes modern design artworks in the genealogy of Art Nouveau and Bauhaus, as well as mass-produced ceramics by famous kilns throughout the world that pursue design and art.

In this exhibition room, we introduce the works that represent the concept of our museum.
