Iwata Toshichi, Hisatoshi and Itoko: The Pioneers of Japanese Modern Glass Art from the Collection of Machida City Museum

Iwata Toshichi (1893-1980), his son Hisatoshi (1925-1994), and his wife Itoko (1922-2008) were glass artists who made groundbreaking contributions to modern Japanese art glass. They elevated glass from everyday object to art by harnessing vividly colored glass to explore bold designs informed by traditional Japanese palettes and forms.
This exhibition presents around 100 outstanding works by Iwata Toshichi, Hisatoshi and Itoko from the collection of the Machida City Museum. In addition, the special section entitled “Another Pioneer, Kagami Kozo: The World of Crystal Glass, from the Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu” will introduce the works by Kagami Kozo (1896-1985), a native of Kasahara Village (now Tajimi City), Toki County, Gifu Prefecture.
